I smell a RACKET!

We are new to the world of eyeglasses. Just last year, we discovered that Maren needed glasses and we went to a warehouse style store (yeah- you know the one - famous for their (icky nasty) hotdogs) for a test and glasses. They did not accept insurance - price for the glasses was appx 100 bucks. We also grabbed 2 pairs at Wallies when the others were lost - appx 70 bucks/pair.

This year, I decided to support the local dude. I regretted that decision when they tallied the bill and it has continued to burn my conscience. Today I was informed that they undercharged us, by 76$. We are going to get 1 pair of glasses for $344.00! What!!?? I feel like I've been robbed! I'm all for supporting the "little guy", but this is foolishness.

What's your experience? What's the best deal?

We buy a lot of glasses, and use Costco for all but mine and Ron's bifocals. We think that means ours are cut more carefully, but it seems Costco does as well, usually at a third the price. Also at Costco you can get them replaced, even out of State just by going to any store(Sarah has broken a few pair and they had her prescription on file)

Same experience as you... At one point I had insurance and thought I'd go to a local 'real' eye place. I ended up paying tons (even with insurance--go figure) and so I've gone to Costco ever since. I switched over to contacts and it is definitely the best deal! We believe in supporting the local businesses--for obvious reasons :), but in this case, we can't!!!

Thanks for your most highly regarded and valued opinions! Is it too tacky to get the test at the local guy (insurance covers) and then get glasses at Costco?

Sincerely, your friend (the cheapskate)

Costco is best price. My prof'ng eye doc's office charged $400 for glasses. Ones at Costco were $150 at most...sad to say...

You're supporting the local guy with the exam, but not Ralph Lauren by buying his frames. I'd rather pay less for frames and be able to update more often, but then I'm probably considered tacky. Gone both routes and been happiest with Costco.

ZenniOptical.com is a mail order place to get glasses for way less, even less than Costco. Downside is you can't try them on, but you can upload your picture and have a lot of fun putting glasses on yourself. You need your pupillary distance, which the DR doesn't usually write on your RX, but they'll give it to you if you ask for it. You also need a pair that fits well so you can measure lens width and height, bridge width, and bow length, all in millimeters. Then you can take them to Wallies and get them adjusted for free. I got my last pair this way, and the RX is right on even for my high RX and high-index lenses.
